All the information you need about high schools in spain. Education system in Spain

In Spain there are three major educational models: State, private and partially state-funded.  These two models are state-funded and serve children ranging in age from three to eighteen. Education is both free and largely secular. Because partially state-funded independent schools/charter schools are privately owned, any additional services are supplied at a price comparable to private schools. Local education administrations are in charge of state schools. To enroll in these schools, you must be a resident of Spain, and you must demonstrate this status by producing a series of documents.

Spain has numerous elementary and high schools. In Spain, primary or elementary education is obligatory and begins at the age of six and lasts until the age of twelve. In Spain, the local government (Comunidades Autónomas) is in charge of primary education and attempts to ensure that every child has a free place in a primary school in their neighborhood. Formative and summative assessments are used to track students’ development throughout their school years. Parents receive regular updates, and at the conclusion of the year, a record detailing their child’s results in each subject is sent to them. Children complete a math and language evaluation at the end of their third year. They are also assessed in these disciplines, as well as science and technology, at the end of their sixth year. Educación Secundaria Obligatoria (ESO) and Bachillerato, or professional training, are the two stages of secondary or higher education in Spain. ESO is required, but Bachillerato, or university preparation, is not. In Spain, all children must attend school until they reach the age of sixteen. Between the ages of 12 and 16, the majority of pupils attend an Instituto, which is a secondary school. The four required secondary years (cursos) are split into two phases (ciclos): the first to third curso and the fourth curso. Students can repeat two years in the first ciclo, but they can only repeat the fourth year if they have not repeated any of the previous years. Students are given a certificate at the end of the compulsory stage confirming that they have completed compulsory lower secondary education.

Admission process in schools of Spain

The elementary schools in Spain as well as high schools in Spain have a defined admission process. Private schools are not subsidized by the government and have more autonomy, as well as a wider range of curricula and educational projects. If the school has open spots, admission and enrolment can take place at any time during the academic year. Private schools are free to set their own admissions and price policies, and they notify families on an individual basis. Private schools have complete management autonomy, which implies that each center determines its own admissions and access procedures. Language and academic exams, as well as a certificate of formal acknowledgment of studies in the case of older students, are required by the majority of international schools.

  2. Primary schooling is for children aged 6 to 12. Compulsory.
  3. Secondary school is compulsory from the age of 12 to 16.
  4. From 16 to 18 years of age, vocational training courses (Formación professional de grado medium) are also available.
